Millions filling out returns for nothing
HMRC figures show almost a quarter of people who file tax returns owe less than £50 or nothing at all at the end of the process. Nothing is owed on 16% of all tax returns, while less than £50 is due on another 8%. The data means 2.67m people fill in returns - or pay accountants to do it for them - despite owing nothing at all, and another 880,000 owe less than £50.
