Calls for clarity on IR35
Accountants and the self-employed are calling for clarity on the IR35 quirk, which means contractors hired by public sector organisations can be taxed as employees without being granted full employment rights. Mike Gibson, a consultant who advises local authorities on cost reduction, is fundraising to launch a court challenge of the law, which he describes as unfair. Anita Monteith of the ICAEW said that while the policy was necessary, greater clarity is needed.
