Middle-class professionals targeted by HMRC
Figures show HMRC is recovering more tax from so-called “mass affluent” professionals - a group of 500,000 taxpayers who earn more than £150,000 a year or own wealth of more than £1m but less than £20m – than it is from the super-rich. The taxman clawed £137m from the group last year, up from £86m in 2012-13. HMRC"s High Net Worth Unit, which investigates Britain"s richest individuals, brought in £268m in the same period.
