Brussels considers EU-wide tax proposals
Petrol, electricity and airfares could be taxed under radical proposals to fund the EU budget. Mario Monti, the former Italian Prime Minister, is leading a task force examining ways of shifting revenues from national contributions - which make up 75% of the £125bn annual budget - to more direct EU-wide taxes. Taking some or all of national governments’ taxes on petrol and diesel would raise up to €40bn a year, the group has calculated.
