Gauke: SMEs will be able to file returns by phone

David Gauke, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, has said SMEs will be allowed to file their tax returns by telephone following concerns that many may struggle with new digital accounts. Two in every five self-employed workers are either unable to use the internet or need help using government services online, according to figures from HMRC. Writing in the Mail, Mr Gauke explains the reasoning behind new digital accounts, claiming they will save businesses £200m a year in accountancy fees and other costs. He emphasises that the system will not mean quarterly tax returns for small businesses, “but instead it means the end of the annual tax return, and a simpler, easier, fairer way of doing things.”
