MPs warn 2m SMEs face £2,000 workplace pension bill

Nearly 2m small businesses could face costs of up to £2,000 under plans to automatically enrol people in pension schemes, MPs have warned. Individuals who employ just one member of staff will have to start paying into a workplace pension for them within three years. Meg Hillier, the PAC chairman, said: "For small businesses this is a major change which will require a lot more paperwork and a knowledge of the law. It is a lot to get to grips with. They are worried about it. We urge HMRC to step in and automate it as much as possible. If you are a business with one or two employees they might not think this applies to them. It does.”
