This helpline has been introduced to help taxpayers easily check whether or not a caller claiming to be from HMRC is genuine.

A small number of taxpayers who have not paid their tax or arranged to repay overpayments of tax credits are visited by HMRC in order to collect the debt. A taxpayer’s home or business premises can be visited by The Debt Management and Banking"s Field Force Collectors. Advanced warning of a visit is always given by the HMRC if a debt is owed.

In order to protect taxpayers against bogus callers, HMRC have introduced the Field Force Verification Helpline. If a taxpayer suspects that a Collector may not be genuine, they should first ask to see the Collector’s photo ID and make a note of the ID number. They should then call 0300 200 3862 and provide HMRC with the noted ID number. One of the HMRC operators will then be able to confirm whether the caller is a genuine HMRC Collector or not.

A leaflet will be distributed to all taxpayers visited explaining the purpose of the visit, as well as the rights and responsibilities of customers. The leaflet will feature the Field Force Verification Helpline number.
