SMEs doubt HMRC acts fairly on taxes

An annual appraisal of how HMRC applies penalties and sanctions has found that only a third of SMEs believe the taxman applies rules equally to those who break the law. Despite a 2% increase on the previous year’s survey, fewer than half of respondents agreed HMRC effectively ensured all individuals paid the correct amount of tax. The latest survey also showed 78% of small business owners agreed HMRC treated all customers fairly, down 2% on last year. However, only a third agreed the tax office operated efficiently without wasting money. More positively, over eight in ten respondents agreed HMRC acted professionally and believed they were treated honestly when dealing with tax queries.
