Committee questions costs of HRMC’s digital plans

The Treasury select committee has called for more clarity on the costs of implementing HMRC’s plans for a digital tax system for businesses. Committee chairman Andrew Tyrie has written to Jane Ellison, financial secretary to the Treasury, to request further detail on the Revenue’s claim that the Making Tax Digital programme will cost only £280 per company to set up. It comes after the FSB warned that the true cost would be significantly higher – as much as £2,770 per business per year. Mr Tyrie said: “If the FSB is right, the effects of Making Tax Digital would be crippling for many small businesses.”
