Harris & Co chartered accountants Northampton have reviewed the success of English business magnate, Sir Richard Branson.
Known for founding the Virgin group, Richard Branson is now the forth richest citizen of the UK, estimated to have a net worth of over 27 billion. From humble beginnings in Blackheath, south-east London, Branson began his first business venture in 1966 with a magazine called The Student. Set up at the age of 16, Branson advertised popular records and music news. After the success of his magazine, he then established a mail order record business in 1970. Trading under the name Virgin, the business was an overnight success. Selling records at considerably less than his high-street competitors, Branson took the music market by storm.
By 1971, he had opened his first record shop on Londons Oxford Street, and was earning enough money to launch his own record label a year later. Signing controversial brands such as the Sex Pistols and Culture Club, Virgin Records won praise for exposing the British public to what was an avante-garde music scene. In 1984, Branson formed Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin Mobile in 1999.
Up to the present day, Branson has launched or purchased over 20 businesses including space programs, train lines, banks, gyms, healthcare and global warming initiatives. On March 30th 2000, he was knighted for his services to entrepreneurship by Prince Charles, becoming Sir Richard Branson. Patron of numerous charities, he appears on the 2002 list of 100 Greatest Britons.
