Are You One of the 70% Unprepared for MTD?
Even more concerning, with the first mandatory reporting deadline hitting on 7 August 2026, only 8% of sole traders are currently using MTD-compatible software to manage their business records. This leaves the vast majority of business owners exposed to potential compliance failures as HMRC transitions to a digital-first tax regime.
Who Is Affected Right Now?
The new mandate strictly target sole traders and landlords who earned a qualifying gross income of over £50,000 during the 2024/25 tax year. If you fall into this bracket, the traditional annual self-assessment process has been replaced by a mandatory loop of quarterly digital updates.
Under MTD for Income Tax, you must:
- Maintain Digital Records: Record all business income and expenses dynamically. Paper logbooks and manual ledger tracking are no longer compliant.
- Submit Quarterly Returns: File a summary of your financial records directly to HMRC using specialised software every three months.
The Countdown to 7 August 2026
The Sage research highlighted that a lack of awareness is the biggest hurdle, with less than 40% of tradespeople and small business owners able to identify when their first filing is due.
The first quarterly tracking window covers transactions made between 6 April and 5 July 2026. This means you have until 7 August 2026 to get your software connected, categorise your first three months of transactions, and submit your update to HMRC.

Why "Wait and See" Is a Risky Strategy
While HMRC has signaled a temporary "soft landing" regarding penalty points for late quarterly submissions during the initial year, this grace period does not apply to record-keeping failures. Failing to log digital transactions from April onwards means trying to rebuild months of data retroactively when the regulations are strictly enforced—leading to an administrative logjam.
Furthermore, standard spreadsheets cannot communicate with HMRC directly. If you are among the 92% of business owners not yet using functional cloud software, you face a steep learning curve to select, configure, and integrate a platform before August arrives.
