HMRC has announced that the guidance notes to be sent out with the paper self assessment 2012/13 tax return will be shorter versions this year, reports Harris & Co accountancy services. These focus on areas taxpayers sometimes get wrong, and use everyday language and visuals to help.

For those needing more information, the brief notes direct them to the full versions, which will still be available online and from the Self Assessment Orderline.

HMRC is asking for feedback on these and will then review what it does for next year.

We have also been told that rather than post out all 2012/13 paper tax returns at the beginning of April, HMRC will be spreading them throughout April. This is to help reduce pressure on its call centres. If you need a return straight away, you can register and send it online or download the forms from its website.
